Found-Parametrics & Other Things: First Year Design Works at Yeni Yuzyil University Department of Architecture (Photo Albums at the Very End)

Introduction

Found-Parametrics and Other Things is a selection of works completed largely at the second half of this Spring Semester. Structured and run by Ali Dur, Gülnaz Güzeloglu and Güher Tan, the Studio, now four years old, has evolved into a partially-scripted atmosphere of a first rendezvous with Architecture built heavily on personal and intimate moments and where the discipline is introduced within its multi-layered framework and with its extended areas of knowledge. Seemingly being in the vicinity of the established curriculum of Basic Design courses, the Design Studio often works against their conventional order and limitations on content.

Halihazır Parametrikler ve Diğer Şeyler, Yeni Yüzyıl Üniversitesi Mimarlık Bölümü Birinci Sınıf Stüdyosu Bahar Dönemi üretimlerinin ağırlıkla ikinci yarısını kapsayan bir seçki. Ali Dur, Gülnaz Güzeloğlu ve Güher Tan tarafından yürütülen ve yaklaşık 4 senedir farklı denemeler ile evrilerek olgunlaşan Tasarım Stüdyosu, yerleşmiş temel tasarım derslerinin söz ettikleri ile ilişkili ama genel olarak aleyhinde bir içerik ile öğrencilerin mimarlıkla tanıştıkları ortamı tasarlamayı; bu ilk randevuyu çok katmanlı, olabildiğince kişisel anlardan oluşan bir yapıda ve eğlenceli kılmayı hedefliyor.

The City of Peace

Regardless of scale, content or material, with the central idea of making Architecture and talking about Architecture at heart, the Studio kicks off with the design and construction of spaces for relaxation for a single person out of the only materials present inside the studio on the very first day: Structures made out of chairs and tables in two hours, an Architecture of Tables & Chairs so to say. Following that are the weeks where students are encouraged to expand their research on their own areas of interest, supported by personal explorations and collective learning over round-tables in addition to concentrated production hours.

This part involves a period which incepts from students’ own peaceful moments, stored in their memory or dreams, and then proceeds out into the wild. Following where their own conception of peace leads, students chase after their dreams and what they happen to correspond with; they stroll into other areas of knowledge (places, cities, buildings, concepts, architects, stories, novels, history, movies etc.) in which, magically and thankfully, Architecture has secretly infused. This makes a two-fold journey, one going inwards to oneself and one out into the world beyond, towards the world of Architecture. All this research is materialized onto a plot of 40 by 40, in the form of a private architectonic composition that makes a chunk of a collective City of Peace.

Ana maksadın ölçeğinden, içeriğinden ve malzemesinden bağımsız olarak mimarlık yapmak ve mimarlık konuşmak olduğu program, stüdyonun ilk gününde sınıfta bulunan yegane malzemeler olan masa ve sandalyelerle 2 saat sürede grupça tasarlanıp inşa edilen “kafa dinleme mekanları” ile başlıyor. Bunu takip eden kişisel keşif + kolektif öğrenme haftaları, birbirine eşlik eden yuvarlak masa konuşmaları ve üretim saatlerinden meydana gelmekte. Bu bölüm, öğrencilerin kendi huzurlu anılarından / hayallerinden yola çıkarak hem kendi ilgilerinin hem de onların işaret ettiği, mimarlığın dağılıp gizlice nüfuz ettiği bilgi alanlarının (yerler, yapılar, kavramlar, mimarlar, hikayeler, romanlar, filmler vs.) araştırıldığı ve bir “Huzur Şehrinde” 40×40’lık bir parselde inşa edildiği haftalara denk geliyor. Bu parseller aslında, öğrencinin hem kendine hem de mimarlığa doğru yaptığı iki yönlü ve eşzamanlı bir yolculuğun kaydı ve sonuç ürünleri manasına da geliyor.

The More The Merrier

Spring Semester seeks to involve works more in number and smaller in scale, which makes it easier to sustain the energy and the continuity during production while proliferating the effect of ‘leaving things behind’, meaning the joy of completing a work and moving forward, that works in favor of the Studio. The Closures, a diagrammatic double-reading of last semester’s projects and those possess similarities in idea or execution produced by other architects, provides a last chance to bid a productive and informative farewell to students’ own work. Without knowing their existence before, students get the chance to meet and compare corresponding ideas through the critical language of Architectural Diagrams and to re-evaluate their own work among the global architectural index. Another study, meandering around the concepts of mapping, motion and notation, invites students to reenact a personal memory of meeting and to rebuilt and expand it spatially. The Architecture of Meeting is another example of architectural investigation of personal and everyday matters, a study that points out the soft matters of space design like talking, moving, gazing and body alongside the spatial basics like point, line, surface and intersecting planes, which also frames it as a profound assignment of Architectural Geometry.

Bahar döneminde genel stüdyo enerjinin düşmemesi, devamlılığının ehemmiyeti ve iş bitirip “arkada bırakmanın” hazzının öğrencilerce çoğaltılması amacıyla Güz’e nazaran daha çok ve küçük parçalı işler üretilmekte. “Closures / İkili Veda” isimli çalışma, özet ve kritik bilginin aktarıcısı olan (mimari) diyagramları deneyletirken, öğrencilerin bir önceki dönemde yaptığı ilk gerçek kurgulu projeye daha nitelikli ve öğrenerek veda etmesini amaçlamakta. Burada öğrencinin, önceki dönem varlıklarından habersiz bir şekilde gerçekleştirdiği projesiyle ortak temaları / fikirleri / uygulamaları barındıran literatürdeki başka yer ve proje örnekleriyle sonradan tanışmasının ardından, diyagram dilleri üzerinden bu ortaklıkları inceleyen ve böylece “aynı dilden konuşmalarının” sağlandığı çizimler ve paftalar üretilmiştir. Bunu takip eden başka bir çalışma haritalama / hareket / notasyon kavramları etrafında, gene öğrencilerin kendi hafızalarındaki bir tanışma anını genişletip uzamsal ve mimari olarak incelemesini konu almaktadır. “Tanışmanın Mimarisi”, şahsi olan mevzuların mimari alana taşındığı ve tekrardan inşa edildiği; mekanı düzenleyen katı öğelerin yanında bakışma, konuşma, hareket, vücut gibi geçici, animatif ve duyusal elemanların incelendiği ve bunun yanında nokta, doğru, yüzey, kesişme gibi temel uzamsal öğelerin de kullanıldığı bir “mimari geometri” çalışması olarak gelişmiştir.

Genetically-Altered Parametrics

Open until mid-August, the selection heavily showcases one-to-one scaled work of Found-Parametrics installed around the campus. These pieces are actually the final stage of another project which stems from the concepts of site, slope and representation of topography in the form of topographical models. Students are asked to reconstruct a given sloped site in Macka Park in Besiktas, in order to build structures of 500 milliliters volume in 1:200 scale with limited wooden sticks, 12 at maximum, on them. This followed by a insertion study of bristol paper to create surfaces and imagine spaces that are partially free of the structure. With a critical break from this process, students working in groups are engaged in an intense work of research-&-development on parametrical components and surfaces by bringing tons of everyday objects like paper cups and egg cartons into the studio. By learning and then hacking their “found parametrics”, these objects are used to create components and systems that dwells on what was at hand and what can be modified to enhance their performative qualities in the form of new building systems. Such modifications were made with pure trial and error, simply by making prototypes and making further alternations (research by design) through interventions on their sizes, angles and joining principles.

Ağustos ayı ortasına kadar görülebilecek sergide yer alan ve 1/1 ölçekte okul mekanına uygulanan Halihazır Parametriklerden oluşturulan yüzeyler, aslında başka bir çalışmanın devamı. Maçka Parkı örneği üzerinden, eğim ve arazinin maket olarak yeniden inşası / soyutlaması gibi kavramlarla tanışan öğrenciler önce 1/200 ölçekte 500ml’lik bir hacmi çevreleyen ve sınırlı malzemelerle (maksimum 12 adet çöp şişten) üretilmiş strüktürlerin içerisinde, bu strüktürle ilişkili ama ondan bağımsız da çalışabilen “bristol katlamaları” ile yüzey + mekan niteliğinde yerleştirmeler oluşturdular. Bunun devamında daha kalabalık ekiplerin birer Ar-Ge departmanı şeklinde sürekli yaparak çeşitledikleri ve geliştirdikleri (Research by Design) ve atık / gündelik malzeme diyebileceğimiz ürünlerin stüdyoyu işgal etmesi sonucu oluşturulan parametrik birimler, bir takım performatif nitelikleri üzerinden değişimlere uğrayarak yüzey ve sistemlere dönüştürüldüler. Burada sözü edilen değişimler, birimin kendisinin ve kendi içindeki bağlantıların, eleman sayılarının, ölçülerin, açıların ve birimler arası bağlantı şekillerinin bilinçli farklılaşmalarına işaret etmektedir. Bu, malzemelerin halihazır olarak bulunan parametrelerinin bir anlamda hack’lenmesi, değiştirilmesi ve mimarca kontrol edilmeye çalışılması anlamına gelmektedir.

Critically noticed as being “genetically nomadic” in the final reviews, these systems are inserted ‘back’ into the structures according to several performative and spatial roles they can take through necessary proliferation and versioning based on their “genetically-altered parametrics”. These re-insertions are represented through photo-collages and animations as a new form of design development. In another critical reading, such process of breaking the conventional scaling-down model by shifting down to the scale of components right in the middle may offer an alternative and non-linear design process where the large scale design decisions give way to the re-evaluation of potential roles and versioning of parametric systems in a back-and-forth methodology. Also present in the exhibition, open-sourced catalogues depict the making of parametrical systems, detailing materials and alternations with their connection methods.

Daha sonradan jüri yorumlarında da dikkati çeken “göçebe” halleri ile Maçka strüktürlerine geri yerleştirilen yüzeyler, bu mekanlar içerisinde yapabilecekleri üzerinden, parametrelerine sadık kalınarak çoğaltıldılar. Bu gerçekleme ve mekanda rol alma kısmında ise fotomontaj çalışmaları ve bunların üzerinden üretilmiş videolar devreye giriyor. Bir anlamda alışılageldik, ölçeklerin artarak sıralanmasıyla ilerleyen sürece, bu malzemelerle yapılan birleşme / üreme (parça + bütün) Ar-Ge’leri ile ara verilmiş; ilk mekandaki ve 1/200’deki kararlardan ziyade, keşfedilen yeni parametrik niteliklerin alabilecekleri rollerin yeniden düşünülmesinin yön verdiği “git-gel’li ve çok kanallı” bir tasarım süreci denenmiştir. Sergide ayrıca grupların yüzeylerini ve sistemlerini hangi malzemelerden nasıl oluşturduğuna, nasıl çeşitlenip uygulanabildiğine dair diyagramlar içeren açık-kaynak kataloglar da görülebilir.
