Eskisehir Block Party – Youth Town // Gençlik Kasabası (Phase // Asama II)

Meeting Requirements

Following the first phase, the Block Party proposal is shortlisted for further development & detailing. Meeting with the clients and advisors, the project has now been subjected to a more detailed brief regarding investment turnover & management, and more concrete demands like programmatic components and floor space required. One major cue to inform the second phase was a dense ratio of accommodation units (20.000 – 25.000 sqm2) alongside a gym and a fair use of outdoor green space.

When the required space of temporary and longer term housing units is incorporated within the restrictions of site and maximum height, a fair amount of the existing building’s footprint becomes occupied, at almost two thirds, posing a problematic of one colossal volume standing next to the old settlement. In order to reserve the initial idea of courtyards & alleys within the contrasting axle, the three-story housing volume is disunited into five blocks, “cracks”, functioning in the original scheme where each one is accessed through inner courtyards, integrated to the main circulation alley and North-South passageways (see the study sketches below). Aligned with the new axle of 20 degrees SE, the blocks are rotated and shaped for proliferating unit views & integrating landscape elements (see the diagram above). The housing blocks (apart units, a hotel and student housing) often offer views outwards and to the courtyards, maximizing the natural light, with a relatively quiet atmosphere and several commercial + social units on the ground level.

Birinci elemeyi geçen öneri, müsterinin yatırım ve isletme giderleri ile iliskili olarak talep ettigi daha tanımlı programatik ögeler ve büyüklükler dogrultusunda gelistirilmistir. Genclik Kasabasında önerilen programa ek olarak istenen spor merkezi, anfi-tiyatro ve yogun bir yesil alan haricinde, projenin detaylanması sürecinde en etkili olan girdi toplam metrekare içerisinde oldukça yogun olarak nitelendirilebilecek (20.000 – 25.000 m2) konaklama birimleri olmustur. Cekme mesafeleri ve yükseklik sınırlamaları göz önüne alındıgında yekpare ve 3 katlı bir kütle olarak yer alan konaklama birimleri mevcut binanın ayak izinin neredeyse 3’te 2’sini kaplamaktadır. Ilk önerinin yapıtası olan sürekli avlu konsepti ve önerilen yeni tezat aks sistemi dogrultusunda, bu yekpare ve farazi kütle parçalara bölünmüstür. Daha sonra mevcut dolasım ve aks sistemi ile entegre olması için döndürülen ve iç avlular ile ulaşılan bloklar, yüzey ve manzara artısı, dogal ısık maksimizasyonu ve peyzaj ile içiçe olması dogrultusunda sekil bozulmalarına ugramıstır. Cogu zaman hem dısarıya hem de ic avluya manzarası olan “parça-bloklar” (apart birimler, ögrenci yurtları ve bir otel), nazaran daha sessiz ve doga (ısık, hava ve yesil) ile entegre bir atmosfere ve ana dolasım aksına komsu olan 0 kotlarında ticari ve sosyal birimlere sahiptirler.

 The New Site Plan 

The resulting site plan is another chapter in the “co-existence & contrast” concept where the existing building is “swallowed” and neighbored by new blocks in an unified scheme. The main circulation alley is continued outdoors towards east, passing through parking lots, and reaches to a even more quiet area, a green park, where it levels down and transforms into a continuous ramp/amphitheater supporting outdoor activities related to the Museum and everyday recreation. 

Ortaya çıkan yeni vaziyet planı daha önce önerilen hibrid ve karsıt mimarlık konseptini güclendirirken, aks uyumu ve parçalı görüntü ile bir bütünlük saglamaktadır. Ana dolasım aksı (mavi aks) dogu yönüne dogru açık alanda devam etmekte, otopark alanlarının arasından geçerek yesil bir parka ulaşmaktadır. Burada, Müze ve genel rekreasyon aktivitelerine hizmet edecek sekilde, mavi aks sürekli alçalan girdap bir rampaya dönüserek amfi-tiyatroyu olusturmaktadır. 

The Museum Building

The museum space is further detailed in plan with a hybrid structural system, providing extra square meters for storage & exhibition, a mid-size lecture hall, a library and a workshop space. The permanent collection is exhibited at the ground level, accessed through three directions where, linked with the square on the northwest, the museum becomes an integral part of “a continuous public space”. The temporary exhibition space is located on the upper level, accessed via a box office and stairs. Cultural activities are also supported by several rentable units for clubs, workshops and civil organizations alongside a bookstore and a design store located west of the main building.

Mekan dönüstürücü niteligiyle eski kütlenin “içine sokulan” ve sergi + depolama hacimlerinin yer aldıgı Sarı Kütle ile olusan muze mekanı plan ve hibrid strüktür sistemi olarak detaylandırılmıstır. Bu kütle ayrıca ek metrekare ve yükseklik de saglamaktadır. 3 farklı yönden ulasılabilen ve kuzeybatıdaki meydanla direkt baglantılı kalıcı sergi, 0 kotunda sürekli hale getirilen bir kamusal mekanın devamı niteliginde calısmaktadır. Geçici sergi alanı, bilet gisesinden gecerek ve merdivenle ulasılan ikinci katta bulunmaktadır. 2 katlı ve servis girisine yakın olan depo birimi haricinde ara-mekanlarda orta büyüklükte bir konferans salonu, bir kütüphane, atölye alanı ve kafe bulunmaktadır. Kültürel aktiviteleri destekleyecek nitelikte, kiralabilen aktivite, atölye ve klüp birimleri, birer adet kitap ve tasarım magazası da ana yapının daha hareketli olan batı kısmında yer almaktadır.
